India has formally appealed wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification from the 50kg women’s wrestling freestyle gold medal bout at the Paris Olympics 2024. Vinesh Phogat was disqualified for failing to meet the stipulated weight on the morning of the bout, despite making history as the first Indian woman wrestler to reach the gold medal bout in this category.
Government and IOA Response
Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya addressed Parliament, confirming Vinesh’s disqualification due to weighing 50kg and 100 grams, which is over the limit. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) lodged a strong protest with United World Wrestling (UWW). IOA President PT Usha is in Paris, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged her to take necessary action. Despite extensive support and facilities provided to Vinesh, she now returns empty-handed.
“We cut her hair, shortened her clothes. Did everything possible.”

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirmed the development, requesting privacy for Vinesh Phogat.
