The Delhi Capitals IPL franchise has reportedly reached out to former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh for a coaching position ahead of the 2025 season’s mega auction. The franchise recently ended its seven-year association with former Australian captain Ricky Ponting.
Yuvraj Singh In DC or GT?
According to Sportstar, the Delhi Capitals, who have struggled to make the playoffs in the past three seasons and finished sixth in 2024 with seven wins and seven losses, are eager to bring Yuvraj Singh on board. However, the final decision on his appointment has yet to be made.
It was previously reported in News 18 that the Gujarat Titans are expected to part ways with head coach Ashish Nehra and Director of Cricket Vikram Solanki before the 2025 season. The 2022 champions were considering bringing Yuvraj Singh onto their coaching staff. This comes as mentor Gary Kirsten has left to take on a full-time role with the Pakistan cricket team. However, sources informed Sportstar that Nehra might stay with the Titans, though the franchise is still exploring options to fill Kirsten’s position, potentially including discussions with veteran Indian cricketers.
If Delhi Capitals secure Yuvraj Singh’s services, it would mark his debut as a coach of a professional cricket team. While he has not coached a team before, he has previously worked with players such as Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma over recent years.
Delhi Capitals Part Ways With Ricky Ponting
In July, Delhi Capitals decided to part ways with Ricky Ponting due to dissatisfaction with the team’s recent performances. Ponting, who joined Delhi in 2018 when the team was known as Delhi Daredevils, initially struggled with a last-place finish in his first season. However, under his leadership, Delhi reached the playoffs for three consecutive years from 2019 to 2021, including a runner-up finish in 2020. Despite this success, the team has failed to make the final four in the past three seasons.
There were speculations that Sourav Ganguly, the franchise’s director of cricket, might step into the head coach role, with the former India captain indicating his interest. However, a recent media report suggests that Delhi Capitals are unlikely to appoint Ganguly as head coach, given his existing commitments with the ILT20 team Dubai Capitals and the SA T20 league side Pretoria Capitals.
