India-Bangladesh women’s series set to be called-off amid… Here’s what triggered it

The India-Bangladesh women’s cricket series is set to be called off as rising diplomatic tensions stall essential clearances. The BCCI is now exploring alternate plans for December.

IND W vs BAN W: Bangladesh’s women’s cricket team was supposed to tour India this December for 3 ODIs and 3 T20Is, but that’s not happening anymore. The series, which was part of the ICC Future Tours Programme, just hasn’t gotten the green light. Ongoing diplomatic tensions between India and Bangladesh are behind the delay. Neither cricket board is likely to say much about it, but a BCCI official told Hindustan Times, “The series hasn’t received the clearance.”

Interestingly, the dates and venues were never officially out there. There’s been uncertainty hanging over this tour for a while, even before Monday’s big political news in Bangladesh, a tribunal court sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death. That only made everything messier and, honestly, pretty much killed any chance the tour could go ahead as planned.

This sort of thing isn’t new between these two countries. Back in August, India’s men’s team was supposed to visit Bangladesh for a white-ball series, but they pushed it to September 2026. The BCCI blamed “international cricketing commitments and scheduling convenience” at the time, but the tensions were already bubbling under the surface.

Now that December’s suddenly free, the BCCI is looking into setting up a quick home series for the Indian women’s team instead. They haven’t played since winning the ODI World Cup, so getting some match time in is a big deal.

But there’s not much wiggle room. The Women’s Premier League kicks off in early January, and straight after that, India heads to Australia for a full-format tour. That’s going to be huge, especially after that wild World Cup semifinal where Australia just barely beat India.

If the Bangladesh series really is off, Indian fans can still look forward to at least a short, competitive home series for the women’s team before the WPL begins.
