Adding another feather to his career, India opener Shubman Gill on Sunday became the fastest batter to score 2000 runs in ODIs during his team’s World Cup match against New Zealand at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala.
Before the start of the innings, Gill needed 14 runs to achieve the milestone. In the fourth ball of the seventh over, the right-handed batter played a cover drive for four off Trent Boult to get to the 2000-run mark in 50-over cricket.
The 24-year-old Gill reached the milestone in 38 innings, breaking the record of former South African batter Hashim Amla who needed 40 innings to score 2000 ODI runs. Shubman also broke Shikhar Dhawan’s record of being the fastest Indian batter to score 2000 runs. Dhawan set the record in his 48th ODI innings.
However, the young Indian opener couldn’t convert his start to a big innings and got out to Lockie Ferguson in the 14th over of India’s run-chase after scoring 26 runs.
Notably, Gill had missed India’s first two matches of the ongoing ODI World Cup due to illness before making a comeback with the match against Pakistan on October 14 in Ahmedabad.
Rohit Surpasses De Villiers In Sixes
India captain Rohit Sharma surpassed South Africa batter AB de Villiers’ tally of sixes in the ODI World Cups after he smashed Trent Boult in the fifth over of the team’s run-chase.
The 36-year-old Rohit, went past de Villiers’ tally of 37 and now sits second on the list of batters with most sixes in the history of the ODI World Cup. Notably, attacking West Indies opener Chris Gayle leads the list with 49 sixes in 35 matches.
Rohit looked in sublime touch during his 40-ball 46 innings and gave India a flying start before being dismissed by Lockie Ferguson in the 12th over.
Sensational Shami Show
With his impressive 5/54, Mohammad Shami became the first Indian bowler to pick two five-wicket hauls. He claimed his previous ODI World Cup fifer 5/69 against England in 2019.
Ashish Nehra (2003), Venkatesh Prasad (1999), Robin Singh (1999), Yuvraj Singh (2011), and Kapil Dev (1983) are the other Indian bowlers to take fifers in the World Cup.
