At the end of the final day of the first India-England Test at Headingley, players wore a minute’s silence before play commenced. Star players from both sides stood in a row with black armbands wrapped around their sleeves as a mark of respect for India spinner Dilip Doshi, who breathed his last on June 23, 2025. Dilip Doshi, a former left-handed spinner from India, passed away in London at the age of 77. The death of Dilip Doshi was confirmed by a close friend, and the BCCI also paid respect on Tuesday, June 24.

Who Was Dilip Doshi?
Doshi played his Test debut for India at the age of 32 in 1979 and played 33 Tests and 15 One-Day Internationals for India from 1979 to 1983 and finished his career with 114 Test wickets and 22 wickets in ODIs. Doshi was also prominent in the domestic circuit as he took 898 wickets in 238 matches and played county cricket as well.
Third Time Players Wore Black Armbands
Day 1 saw both teams take to the pitch with black armbands to pay tribute to the victims of the plane crash in Ahmedabad. The whole stadium prayed for the victims and offered condolences after the fatal June 12 crash. A Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft, heading to London, crashed just a minute after leaving Ahmedabad, killing 181 Indian citizens and 53 British nationals.
Meanwhile, on Day 3, Indian and England players once again kept a minute’s silence at the beginning of play, this time to honor David ‘Syd’ Lawrence, who died at 61.
Indian Women’s Team Also Pays Tribute to Dilip Doshi
The Indian women’s side, who are in England at present, have requested a minute’s silence before their warm-up game with the ECB Select XI and will also don black armbands as a tribute to Dilip Doshi. The board went to Twitter, where they confirmed the fact that the Indian women’s team too would pay their tribute to the late Indian spinner.
