As Harmanpreet Kaur’s India finished Day 1 of the 1st Test against England on a high, the women’s team achieved an incredible feat which etched their name into the record books.
The women’s team became just the second team ever to surpass 400 runs in a single day. This stunning feat unfolded during their one-off Test match against England at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, showcasing India’s dominant batting prowess.
This incredible achievement stands as the first instance of a 400-plus total in a single day in women’s Tests in 88 years. The last occurrence was recorded back in 1935 when England women set the record, amassing an impressive 431 for two against New Zealand at Lancaster Park, Christchurch.
At the end of the opening day’s play, India reached an imposing score of 410 for seven in 94 overs. Deepti Sharma remained unbeaten at 60*, with Pooja Vastrakar at 4*.
Opting to bat in their first home Test since 2014, India displayed a formidable batting performance. Debutants Shubha Satheesh (69) and Jemimah Rodrigues (68) played vital roles, each scoring half-centuries and forming a substantial 115-run partnership for the third wicket, laying a robust foundation for India’s innings.
Despite a bizarre run-out dismissal, captain Harmanpreet Kaur contributed significantly, achieving her highest Test score. Yastika Bhatia made a noteworthy impact, securing her maiden fifty with a brisk 66 off 88 balls. Additionally, the lower-order partnership of Deepti Sharma and Sneh Rana propelled India past the 400-run milestone, with Deepti becoming the fourth player to notch a half-century in the innings.
Their resilient partnership guided India beyond the 400-run mark in 89.1 overs, surpassing their previous highest total at home of 400/6 declared against South Africa in the 2014 home Test.
