Although Sydney Cricket Ground is traditionally a high-scoring ground and good for batting, particularly under lights, spinners get a bit of turn and help. Batting first could have its advantages in night games. But with weather concerns looming over the subsequent Sydney Test scheduled for early January and forecasts predicting substantial rainfall during the Sydney Test window, spin bowling can turn out to be rather inefficacious. Thus there are speculation among fans if Shubman Gill could make a return to the Sydney Test replacing Washington Sundar as there is no other player in the team that the management might want to rest for the match.
Gill’s Could Not Create An Impact
Shubman Gill was replaced by Washington Sundar for the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne so that he could provide a hand with the ball as well as the bat. During the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Shubman Gill endured a challenging series with the bat, managing just 60 runs across his three innings. With a modest average of 20 and a highest score of 31, the talented Indian batsman struggled to make a significant impact in what proved to be a disappointing outing against Australia. But looking after the pitch conditions during the Sydney Test, the return of Gill might help the Indians to put some runs on the board.

Sundar Showed Glimpses Of Promise
Washington Sundar’s performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 showed glimpses of promise, as he accumulated 88 runs across 4 innings. His batting display included a half-century, with his highest score being 50, and he maintained an average of 29 throughout the series against Australia. With the ball Washington has not been that impactful. He took 3 wickets in 4 innings during this BGT edition.
