India’s Rising Star in T20Is
The 25-year-old left-handed opener was India’s most consistent performer throughout the series, finishing as the top run-getter in the 5-match series with a total of 163 runs. With his fearless stroke play and ability to always dominate the powerplay, Abhishek played a crucial role in setting up strong starts for India throughout the series.
Speaking to the media after being named Player of the Series, Abhishek expressed excitement about touring Australia, a country known for its fast, bouncy, and batting-friendly pitches.
“I’ve been waiting for this tournament. When I got to know we’re going to Australia for T20Is, I was very excited. Have seen throughout my career that Australia is very batting friendly. Feel that we could’ve got better totals in between,” Abhishek said.

Abhishek Eyes T20 World Cup 2026
With just three months left for the T20 World Cup, Abhishek Sharma couldn’t have timed his form better. Representing India in the global tournament will be nothing short of a dream come true, said the opener.
“It’s one of the biggest tournaments. It’s my dream come true moment if I’ll be playing the World Cup. As a kid I’ve always dreamt about this – winning the World Cup. Will make sure I’m ready for that tournament,” he said.
His maturity, confidence, and ability to adapt quickly to conditions make him a strong contender for the World Cup squad for India.
Fastest Indian to 1,000 T20I Runs
Adding to his accolades, Abhishek Sharma had etched his name into the record books during the abandoned fifth T20I at Brisbane. He became the fastest Indian to reach 1,000 T20I runs – achieving the milestone in just 29 innings and 569 balls faced since his July 2024 debut.
This also made him the fastest player in the world to the mark in terms of balls faced, beating Australia’s Tim David and India’s Suryakumar Yadav.
Praise for Josh Hazlewood
Abhishek also praised Australia’s pace ace Josh Hazlewood, who had impressed in the early games of the series before skipping the final three matches to prepare for the Ashes.
“The way he was bowling, it was helpful for any team. I have said earlier that I always love the fight between batters and bowlers. He is a world-class bowler. If you want to do well and play good cricket in the future, you have to face world-class bowlers,” Abhishek said.
His comments reflected the mindset of a player determined to test himself against the best-a quality that has long been associated with elite cricketers.
The Road Ahead
While India gears up for the T20 World Cup, Abhishek Sharma’s rise as a trustworthy opener is a big positive. His perfect mix of aggression, technique, and calmness under pressure makes him an exciting asset for the national side. Rain in Brisbane finally washed out the final contest, but it couldn’t dampen the rise of one of India’s most promising T20 stars. Abhishek Sharma’s performances Down Under have not only strengthened his World Cup ambitions but also reminded fans that a new era of Indian cricketing excellence is on the horizon.
