Star India batter Karun Nair, on Saturday, May 31, scored a double hundred against England Lions, sending a clear sign to selectors before India’s Test series against England as he seemed at ease in the conditions and helped his team reach over 400 in Canterbury. Although some believe that Nair is not strong enough to be chosen for India in their first Test against England on June 20 in Leeds, he showed his ability by hitting a double hundred.

Nair entered early on Day 1 after Abhimanyu Easwaran was back in the hut after getting trapped for 8 runs by Josh Hull. Nair teamed up with Yashasvi Jaiswal for a partnership which produced 39 runs for the second wicket before the latter fell to Jack in the 17th over. Nair and Sarfaraz Khan went on to share a huge partnership of 181 runs for the third wicket until Sarfaraz was removed by Hull in the 56th over. Nair and Sarfaraz prevented England, the fielding side, from getting an advantage, following Jaiswal’s wicket.
Nair and Dhruv Jurel scored 195 runs in partnership for the fourth wicket, until Ajeet Dale had the latter out in the 95th over. After that, Nair and Shardul Thakur made a quick 34-run stand for the sixth wicket, until Zaman Akhter trapped Nair out, caught by James Rew. Nair scored his fourth 200-plus in a knock with this innings. He scored 328 for Karnataka in his highest first-class match, against Tamil Nadu in the 2015-16 Ranji Trophy.
Of the previous times Nair scored over 200, he played his entire innings without being caught out. This was the second time he scored a double hundred while playing in England. In the match against Glamorgan last year, Nair made 202* for Northamptonshire, and he continued in the same form. Following Virender Sehwag, Nair is only the second Indian to get a triple hundred in cricket Tests.
