ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024: In a massive upset at the T20 World Cup, New Zealand, who were going in on the back of losing their last 10 matches leading up to the tourney, sent promising India packing with a great win. The defeat came as a huge blow to India, who were set to face a fierce group even before this nightmare of a defeat.

After New Zealand won the toss, they opted to bat first and took control of the match. The opening duo Suzie Bates and Georgia Plimmer started it off with some aggressive batting. At the same time, skipper Sophie Devine came in and played a strong knock-57 off just 36 balls of herself to take New Zealand to a healthy total of 161 despite the assistance that the bowlers got from the pitch.

India, in return, was struggling from the word go, batting erratically in front of New Zealand’s incisive bowling – Rosemary Mair’s swing, Eden Carson’s smarter variations, and Lea Tahuhu’s consistent lengths coming on top as wickets started falling at regular intervals, and India could do only a little over 100 runs.

With this outcome, the way forward for India in the tournament seems one from which they find no way but to improve immensely, whereas New Zealand will take a lot of confidence from such a total victory.
Brief Scores: New Zealand Women 160/4 (Sophie Devine 57*; Renuka Singh 2-27) beat India Women 102 all out (Rosemary Mair 4-19, Lea Tahuhu 3-15) by 58 runs.
