‘I Was Letting The Team Down’: Aussie Star Glenn Maxwell Opens Up About His Real Reason For Retirement From ODIs

Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell announced his retirement from One Day Internationals (ODIs) on Monday, June 2. Maxwell has arguably focused on T20 now the shortest format of the game from now. His commitment towards the ODIs has now come to an end. The T20 World Cup, which is scheduled for 2026 and to be hosted by India and Sri Lanka, tops his priority list. He opens up about his reason to call it quits from ODIs to mainly focus on T20 Championships, Big Bash League, and other global franchise leagues.

"I felt like I was letting the team down a little bit with how my body was reacting to the conditions. When I slow down, it becomes harder to get back up. 20 overs feels enough for me to give my 100% now." Glenn Maxwell said.

Maxwell ODI Career

Maxwell's ODI stats display his prowess as a batter who can bat at the same pace in the 50-over format. He has managed to put 3990 runs in the bag in 149 innings with an impressive strike rate of 126.71. His highest score in the format is 201* runs, which he smashed against Afghanistan in the 2023 World Cup hosted by India. This was a historic innings after stumbling of Australia's top order stumbled when he took over and led his team towards victory by 3 wickets. He has also bagged 77 wickets in the 149 appearances with an economy of 5.46. His ability to restrict runs from the ball has made him an asset for the Australian side, and the team management will have to bridge this gap as early as possible.

Unimpressive IPL 2025

Maxwell was acquired by the Punjab Kings in the IPL 2025 season for 4.20 crores after being released by RCB. Maxwell has failed to create an impact in the IPL this season. Alhtough he took 4 wickets in his 6 innings but with the bat, he just smashed 48 runs. He was ruled out due to a finger injury.
