Dinesh Karthik, the former Indian cricketer and now a commentator has expressed the view that Shubman Gill is yet to fully have grasp on the realities of what is to be a Test captian in the case of India as he has been promited since Rohit Sharma retired. The five Test series against England in June will be Gill’s first assignment. Karthik said before the start to the wash that the 25-year-old is yet to realize the burden of the batting job and the obstacles which are coming his way. He observed that there are so many dominant teams that have gone to England, just to find themselves doing so badly.
Dinesh Karthik’s Statment
“I really don’t think he has realized the enormity of what it means to be a test captain for India as of now. He’s walking into the lion’s den. Coming to England as a cricketing nation is not easy. There has been many a team with superstars who have come in and have found it really hard,” said Karthik on the Sky Sports Cricket Podcast.
“Luckily, for Shubman Gill, the England bowling attack is a very vulnerable. That is the only positive I see, they’re going to be put under pressure with the batting. When I say bat, I mean England batting will definitely put the Indian team under pressure, but the bowling is an area that is still a work in progress for England, and that could very well play into India’s hands,” he added.
Shubman Gill’s Test Cricket Stats
Shubman Gill has proven to be a reliable performer during Test matches as his run tally reads 1,893 in just 51 innings with an average of 35.05. His best ever score in this format of a good 128 shows that he is also capable of initial good starts being translated to big innings. Gill has already scored 5 centuries and 7 half-centuries, which indicates stability and the potential of sitting at the beginning of the Indian batting order. His strike rate of 59.92 is an amalgamation of tactful patience and offensive approach, and makes him an effective member of the Indian red-ball squad. His contributions on some of the critical matches have been critical, and he is still growing to be one of the key players in the Indian test team.
