Wicketkeepers have a crucial role in cricket, as they have the best view of the action and can assist bowlers in targeting the right areas. Former India captain MS Dhoni set high standards for guiding the team from behind the stumps, but some wicketkeepers tend to overdo it with constant appeals. Pakistan’s Mohammad Rizwan is known for his hyperactive behavior behind the stumps, often appealing excessively, which has drawn attention from umpires.

Rizwan’s Overenthusiastic Appeals Noticed by Umpires

Indian umpire Anil Choudhary shared his experience dealing with Rizwan’s behavior during last year’s Asia Cup on the 2 Sloggers podcast on YouTube. Choudhary described Rizwan as someone who appeals frequently, sometimes unnecessarily, causing issues for the on-field umpires. “Har ball pe chillata hai (He keeps shouting on every ball),” Choudhary recalled, noting that Rizwan’s constant appeals led him to alert the other umpire to be cautious about falling for them.

Choudhary emphasized that skilled umpires are quick to detect such tactics, warning wicketkeepers that making false appeals won’t benefit them in the long run. “When the umpires are good, such keepers are losers,” he remarked, advising keepers to avoid embarrassing themselves with excessive appeals in an era of technology where all decisions are scrutinized on screen.

DRS Incident with Rizwan and Babar Azam

Choudhary also recalled a notable moment from the Asia Cup 2022, where Mohammad Rizwan called for a DRS review without consulting Pakistan captain Babar Azam during a Super 8 match against Sri Lanka. Choudhary accepted Rizwan’s call, much to Babar’s surprise, leading the captain to point out, “I am the captain.” This miscommunication added to the frustration as Pakistan went on to lose the match to Sri Lanka by five wickets with three overs remaining.
