Happy Birthday Rahul Dravid: Reliving The Career Of India’s Cricketing Wall

Today, we celebrate one of India's best batters of all time, Rahul Dravid's birthday.

On This Day, January 11: Today, we are celebrating the birthday of one of India’s cricketing legends, Rahul Dravid. His journey began in 1996 at Lord’s, where he scored a brilliant 95 in his debut Test innings just behind his teammate Sourav Ganguly, who made a hundred on the same innings.

It almost became the first time in cricket history that two debutants scored centuries in the same innings. Together, they went on to forge an unforgettable partnership, setting a world record for the highest one-day stand of 318 runs against Sri Lanka in the 1999 World Cup at Taunton.

In the year 2002, Dravid marked four successive Test centuries. This included a memorable 148 at Headingley against England. Headingley was the scene for India’s very rare overseas victory. He continued his brilliance during the 2003-04 tour of Australia when he played a monumental role in the historic win for India. He batted for an astonishing 835 minutes, scoring 233 runs and an unbeaten 72 in the second Test to lead India to a famous victory.

Dravid has been a part of several classic overseas victories. He led India to the first-ever Test series victory in South Africa and also to the first series victory in England after 21 years. In 2008, he became the third Indian to achieve the feat of scoring 10,000 runs in Test cricket. He became the second highest Test run scorer only behind Sachin Tendulkar by 2011, and topped the world in Test run-scoring in 2011 with five centuries and four half-centuries after a dazzling display in England.

Not just a run machine, Dravid was also a great fielder and became the first player to take 200 catches in Tests. After retiring in 2012 following a tough series in Australia, Dravid continued to contribute to Indian cricket by coaching the Under-19s and then the senior men’s national team.

Today, we celebrate Rahul Dravid for not only his achievements in cricketing but also the professionalism humility, and leadership he showed on and off the field.
