John Cena has at last unsealed his lips following his WWE retirement duel. The 48-year-old faced Gunther at Saturday Night’s Main Event XLII, and that was on December 13, which was also his last match. After making LA Knight surrender in the finale of the ‘Last Time Is Now’ tourney on last week’s SmackDown, The Ring General assumed a similar end for Cena.
Gunther ends John Cena’s two-decade winning streak
In the year 2004, during the wrestling match with Kurt Angle, Cena had already submitted once. Thus, Gunther was completely set to topple his rival’s two-decades-long winning streak, which he did by virtue of an impressive performance. The duel was characterized by extreme and ongoing exchanges, the Austrian being the one in most control.
John Cena withstood a multitude of Gunther’s chops and running shoulder blocks that quite literally knocked the wind out of him towards the end. Then, Gunther resorted to applying the Sleeper hold as a last attempt to get the legend to submit.

The referee completed his count by raising Cena’s arm and then allowing it to drop, yet the wrestler was still able to hold it up at 3. Gunther responded with a barrage of elbow strikes and then put on the Sleeper hold again. This time, however, Cena gave up by tapping out, which left the entire audience at the Capital One Arena in disbelief. After his defeat, John Cena was welcomed in the ring by CM Punk and Cody Rhodes, who then showed him their world titles, a recognition that has been part of Cena’s long career at various times.

Triple H and Stephanie McMahon were among the company’s executives who were present at ringside, together with some of the Stamford promotion’s talents. Cena first undid his shoes, took off the arm bands, and wrist bands, and then placed them in the center of the ring as a sign of his retirement from the wrestling business. The former 17-time world champion spoke out through Instagram by posting a photo of his gear in the middle of the ring.
