Dommaraju Gukesh: At just 18 years of age, Dommaraju Gukesh made history by becoming the youngest-ever World Chess Champion. He secured this incredible achievement after defeating reigning champion Ding Liren in the 2024 World Chess Championship final in Singapore, with a narrow 7.5-6.5 victory.
Dommaraju Gukesh Matches Viswanathan Anand’s Feat
This win not only makes Gukesh the second Indian to claim the World Championship title, after the legendary Viswanathan Anand but also marks a significant milestone in chess history, as he is four years younger than Garry Kasparov was when he won his first title.

Grzegorz Gajewski On Dommaraju Gukesh
Following Gukesh’s groundbreaking victory, his chief trainer, Grzegorz Gajewski, offered insights into his playing style. Gajewski stated that while Gukesh might never play like Magnus Carlsen, in terms of intuitive moves, he has his unique approach to the game.
“Gukesh prefers calculation over intuition; he dives deep into positions rather than making moves purely based on gut feeling,” Gajewski explained.
When asked to compare Gukesh’s calculation abilities with other chess legends, Gajewski mentioned that Viswanathan Anand was perhaps unmatched in calculation talent, though his speed sometimes worked against him. He also drew a parallel between Gukesh and a young Fabiano Caruana, highlighting their shared methodical approach to the game.
Gajewski, who served as a second to Anand during the 2014 World Chess Championship and other events, has worked with Indian players at the Westbridge Anand Chess Academy since the pandemic. Since 2023, he has been assisting Gukesh, supporting him through the 2024 Candidates and helping him reach the title match against Ding Liren.
