Hockey World Cup: Harmanpreet Singh, captain of the Indian hockey team, has shared his ambitious vision for the future, focusing on a single, clear goal: winning the Hockey World Cup.
World Cup Victory: The Primary Goal
“Our major target is the World Cup. It’s been a long time since we won the World Cup, so our main focus is to win the World Cup,” Singh said in an interview with ANI.
Singh believes that achieving this goal will involve a series of milestones and strategic preparations in the coming months.
Hockey India League (HIL): A Crucial Preparation Platform
Singh emphasized the role of the Hockey India League (HIL) as a key stepping stone to building momentum for the team. The HIL provides a competitive platform for Indian players to showcase their talent, build cohesion, and prepare for upcoming challenges.
Following the HIL, India will also participate in the Pro League matches, which will be instrumental in the team’s overall development and strategy.
Another key milestone will be the Asia Cup, where Singh sees victory as vital for World Cup qualification.

Record-Breaking Rs78 Lakh Contract with Soorma Hockey Club
This year, Singh made headlines by joining Soorma Hockey Club for a record-breaking Rs78 lakh, the highest-ever bid in the league’s history.
Sharing his excitement, Singh said:
“I am feeling very good, no doubt. The HIL is back after a long time, and it’s great for me to participate. I am very happy. There are a lot of players from the Hockey India League who have a bright future now.”
The financial boost and competitive spirit of participating in the HIL, Singh added, will aid his preparation and role with the Soorma Hockey Club.
Leadership & Motivation: Singh’s Role as a Captain
Balancing his responsibilities as a penalty corner specialist, defender, and team leader, Singh brings maturity and experience to his role.
“My mindset is focused on my responsibilities, both individual and as a leader. I aim to keep all players in a positive frame of mind and boost their confidence before matches. Communication and motivation are key before the match,” he explained.
Singh highlighted the importance of learning from mistakes, fostering team unity, and helping players grow by instilling confidence during both good and challenging moments.
Experience Shapes Leadership: Learning from the Past
With nearly a decade of experience with the national team, Singh draws on lessons learned from his seniors and his own journey. He uses a mix of motivation and strategic communication to connect with the varied mindsets of both young and experienced players.
“Understanding how they will react to what you say is vital. I communicate with them and, if necessary, adopt a tough approach because I know that’s what will bring out their best,” Singh said.
His leadership philosophy focuses on continuous learning, teamwork, and innovation, as he applies lessons from past mistakes to improve himself and his team.
Reflecting on Recent Successes: Tokyo & Paris Olympics
Harmanpreet Singh reflected on the emotional journey of winning bronze medals at the Tokyo and Paris Olympics, describing them as moments filled with pride and inspiration.
“Winning in Tokyo after such a long gap was a proud moment for us. Many players were emotional. The Paris Olympics were equally inspiring because we defeated top teams, including Australia. Winning a medal after 52 years is a big achievement for us,” Singh said.
Singh also stood out as the leading goal-scorer in the Paris Olympics, netting 10 goals in eight matches—a feat that saw him surpass Australia’s Blake Govers (seven goals).
Looking Ahead: A Bright Future for Indian Hockey
Harmanpreet Singh’s leadership, experience, and clear vision for success offer hope and motivation for Indian hockey’s next chapter. With his sights firmly set on the Hockey World Cup and the upcoming milestones in the Pro League and HIL, Singh’s journey continues to inspire young and experienced players alike.
