As the 17th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) begins, all 10 teams will be looking forward to lifting that coveted trophy on May 26 at the Chepauk Stadium. Defending champions Chennai Super Kings will, however, make sure that the title is successfully defended this year in what would be a fitting farewell for MS Dhoni if he decided to finish his IPL career after this season.

With the Round Robin format back into the tournament this year, many fans are confused as to what the format for this season looks like. Here is a simple explanation for fans to understand how the tournament will progress this year.
What is the format of IPL 2024?
Similar to the structure of the teams, the schedule of the tournament has undergone several changes. Initially, the league followed a round-robin format, then transitioned to a group format in the previous edition. However, in the current season, all 10 teams will compete against each other twice, reverting to the round-robin format.
The 10 teams have been divided into two groups. While teams from one group will face each other once, each team will also face the teams from the other group twice.
For eg. a team from Group A will play each team from Group B twice and vice versa.
After the league stage, the top two teams will compete in the first qualifier, while the third- and fourth-placed teams will meet in the eliminator. The winner of the first qualifier will secure a spot in the final, while the loser will face the winner of the eliminator in the second qualifier. The victorious team in the second qualifier will advance to the final alongside the winner of the first qualifier.
