Gautam Gambhir’s Coaching Days Numbered? T20 WC Winner Makes Bold Claim

Former India pacer doubts Gautam Gambhir's long-term prospects as head coach due to his outspoken nature. Despite a successful debut T20I series against Sri Lanka, he believes Gambhir's direct approach and uncompromising decisions may cause issues.

Former India pacer Joginder Sharma believes Gautam Gambhir’s tenure as head coach may be short due to his outspoken nature. Gambhir, who replaced Rahul Dravid last month after the T20 World Cup, led India to a 3-0 T20I series victory against Sri Lanka under Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli returned for the ODI series opener against Sri Lanka, which ended in a thrilling draw.

Despite Gambhir’s positive start, Joginder, a T20 World Cup-winner with Gambhir in 2007, doubts his long-term prospects as head coach. Speaking on Shubhankar Mishra’s podcast, Joginder stated, ‘Gautam Gambhir is managing the team, but I believe he will not last long.’

Joginder cited Gambhir’s direct and uncompromising approach as potential issues. ‘Gautam Gambhir makes his own decisions, which might cause disagreements with players. I’m not talking about Virat Kohli specifically. Often, Gambhir’s decisions are not well-received by others,’ he added.

Joginder further explained that Gambhir is sincere and honest but doesn’t engage in flattery. ‘Gautam Gambhir speaks his mind and doesn’t flatter anyone. We give him credit for his work, which he does sincerely and with great honesty,’ Joginder concluded.
