Much of the discussion around Gautam Gambhir’s appointment as Team India’s new head coach has focused on the future of veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. However, in his first press conference since taking the role, Gambhir hinted that despite their ages—Rohit at 37 and Virat at 35—they remain part of his plans. Gambhir suggested that if they maintain their fitness, both players could potentially be included in the squad for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Gambhir said “Both Virat & Rohit have lots of cricket left, they are World class, any team would have both of them – there is the Champions Trophy, Australia series, then if fitness goes well then the 2027 World Cup”. pic.twitter.com/BERmn0Utwc

“One thing I can be very clear of is that both of those guys (Rohit and Virat) have a lot of cricket left in them. More importantly, with the Champions Trophy and a big tour to Australia, obviously they would be motivated enough,” said Gambhir.
Rohit Sharma continues as the captain of Team India in ODIs and is expected to retain the role in Tests as well. He is strongly anticipated to lead the team in the 2025 Champions Trophy. Gambhir’s recent comments, following an indirect hint from BCCI secretary Jay Shah, further solidify the think tank’s decision to have Rohit as the captain for that tournament.

Gambhir expressed confidence in Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, highlighting their proven performances on major platforms such as the T20 World Cup and the 50-over World Cup.
By the time of the 2027 World Cup, Rohit Sharma will be 40 and Virat Kohli will be 38. Despite this, Gambhir has not excluded them from his plans for the tournament, expressing hope that if they maintain their fitness, they could be part of the squad.
Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar held a press conference ahead of Gambhir’s first series as India head coach, which is the tour of Sri Lanka. Rohit Sharma will lead the ODI team, while Suryakumar Yadav has been appointed captain of the T20I side. Shubman Gill has been named vice-captain in both formats, and Hardik Pandya has not been included in the leadership group.
