Recently the young Indian brigade led by Niki Prasad clinched the ICC U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup by beating South Africa in the final in Malaysia, where in 2008, Indian legend Virat Kohli too clinched the U-19 World Cup by beating the same country. Thanks to this, Prasad joined the elite list of Indian captains to win ICC title.
Here are the Indian captains who’ve won the ICC tournaments:
Kapil Dev (1983)
The former Indian skipper and legendary all-rounder, Kapil Dev was the first Indian skipper to win the World Cup among all Indian captains. Kapil Dev achieved this feat in 1983 where India defeated the then-mighty West Indies at Lord’s.
Mohammad Kaif (2000)
After a long gap, the former Indian skipper Mohammad Kaif also laid his hands on ICC trophy by winning the U-19 World Cup in 2000.
Sourav Ganguly (2002)
The “Dada” of Indian cricket, Sourav Ganguly who’s known for his fearsome and inspiring captaincy also gets in this list. Though Ganguly got his hands on Champions Trophy but it was shared with Sri Lanka as both countries shared the coveted trophy.

MS Dhoni (2007, 2011 & 2013)
When it comes to winning ICC tournament, MS Dhoni’s name would be always on top. Dhoni clinched his first-ever ICC trophy in 2007, where under his leadership, India defeated arch-rival Pakistan in South Africa in T20 World Cup final. After this, under his leadership India also clinched 2011 World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy as well.
Virat Kohli (2008)
The only ICC trophy which Virat Kohli achieved as a captain. The former Indian skipper is known for his sheer batting in all forms of the game. But before being a legendary player, Kohli won the U-9 World Cup in Malaysia by defeating South Africa in the final.
Unmukt Chand (2012)
Another U-19 stars who was once compared with great Virat Kohli, Unmukt Chand rose to the occasion when under his leadership, India clinched the U-19 World Cup by defeating Australia in final.
Prithvi Shaw (2018)
Once claimed to be a young prodigy, Prithvi Shaw too had a great time in 2018 as he clinched the U-19 World Cup as a skipper of the side.
Yash Dhull (2022)
After 4 years of wait, Team India led by Yash Dhull reclaimed the U-19 World Cup in 2022.
Rohit Sharma (2024)
The last on this list is the current Indian skipper Rohit Sharma who finally got his hands on a coveted T20 World Cup Trophy as a captain in 2024 by defeating South Africa.
