Carlos Alcaraz clinched his maiden French Open title on the night after defeating Alexander Zverev in the final on June 9 at the Philippe Chatrier. With the final being played without the presence of any of the ‘Goats’ namely, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, or Roger Federer after a long spell of 20 years, both youngsters looked to capitalize on the chance of winning their first Grand Slam here.
French Open: Thrilling 5-Set Clash For The Fans
Alcaraz won the tie by 6-3, 2-6, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 in what was a fierce battle for supremacy on the clay.
Carlos Alcaraz started as expected and got the first set in his bag 6-3. However, Zverev’s resilient mindset got him back into the game as he got himself the second set 6-2 on the day.
The turning point of the match came when Zverev got the break and won his second consecutive set after a thrilling 7-5 set. However, Alcaraz came back in style and was dominant in the 4th set with a 6-1 triumph.
The game went into the final set as the match which saw the match going toward the young Spaniard. After a hard-fought first four games, the set was tied at 2-2. It was at that moment that Alcaraz channeled his inner Nadal and got a 4-2 lead which looked unassailable on the day.
It was eventually Carlos Alcaraz Garfia who clinched his maiden French Open title, and 3rd Grand Slam title overall as he continued his climb to become a future great.
Zverev fought really hard but had to be content with a runner-up trophy as his quest for a Grand Slam continues.
