The current Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir is under fire following India’s two successive Test series defeats to New Zealand and Australia. Former teammate and legend Mohammad Kaif has questioned his coaching style. The latter, on social media, released a video in which he expressed his frustrations over Gambhir’s decisions during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and questioned his approach.
Kaif pointed out that although Gambhir may not have had the time to address Virat Kohli’s batting issues, his tactical decisions were lacking. He emphasized that the best coaches are tactically astute and know which playing XI to choose based on the conditions.
Kaif posed many specific questions to the selectors: why had they not given Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin any game time in the first Test, or even Dhruv Jurel over Sarfaraz Khan when he had gone a century in the domestic circuit, or choosing Harshit Rana over Prasidh Krishna despite the latter’s suitability to the Australian conditions.
Reports suggest that Gambhir and captain Rohit Sharma will undergo performance reviews by the BCCI in the coming days, with discussions expected to cover various issues, including Ashwin’s mid-series retirement, team dissatisfaction, and Virat Kohli’s poor form.
