Krishnamachari Srikkanth, former India cricketer and chief selector, has stirred controversy by criticizing the BCCI selectors for what he perceives as a biased squad selection for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024. Srikkanth questioned the decision to choose Shubman Gill over Ruturaj Gaikwad in the India reserves, citing Gaikwad’s outstanding performance in the ongoing IPL 2024.

‘Too Much Favoritism By BCCI’
Gaikwad currently holds the Orange Cap in IPL 2024, having scored 509 runs from ten innings at an impressive average of 63.62 and a strike rate of 146.68, including one century and four fifties. In contrast, Gill has amassed 320 runs from ten innings at an average of 35.55 and a strike rate of 140.96, with two half-centuries. Srikkanth expressed his dissatisfaction with Gill’s selection, highlighting his inconsistent form despite being repeatedly given opportunities.
Moreover, Gaikwad boasts a superior T20I record compared to Gill, with 500 runs from 17 innings at an average of 35.71 and a strike rate of 140.05. Gaikwad was also the highest run-scorer in the last T20I series against Australia in 2023, scoring 223 runs at an average of 55.75 and a strike rate of 159.28.
In contrast, Gill has accumulated 335 runs from 14 T20I innings at an average of 25.76 and a strike rate of 147.57, with just one fifty-plus score in his last seven innings. Despite his recent struggles, Gill had an exceptional IPL season in 2023, finishing as the highest run-scorer and also recording the highest individual score for India in T20Is.
