A significant step towards the growing role of the Country in para-athletics was taken when it was announced that India would host the prestigious World Para Athletics Championship. This event will take place at the legendary Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi in November 2025, with participation from more than a hundred countries.
Agreement With World Para Athletics
According to The Times of India, the Paralympic Committee of India has signed a deal with World Para Athletics, which is the new World Athletics for the International Paralympic Committee to host the event. This will be India’s continued investment in inclusive sports and will raise its profile globally within the para-sports community.

Heavy Overhauling: A Championship Will Bring Heavy Overhauling to Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium Preparations ahead of the championship will see major overhauling of the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. SAI has placed a contract for the renovation and will have a new synthetic track to be installed, meeting all the standards of World Para Athletics. All this will prepare the stadium to host international-level para-athletes in the world.

The preparation for the event is already underway and is likely to entail a total cost of around Rs 40-50 crore. The PCI had earlier sent in a request for a no-objection certificate from the Indian government and the hosting guarantee payment has also been deposited with the international body.
Boosting India’s Position In Para-Sports
It would be the biggest sporting event for para-athletes in the country. It would be massive for them, said an official of the PCI, adding: More than 1,000 para-athletes from across the globe will arrive here to bring their talents to the fore, reported Times of India. The event is held to make ripples in the development of para-sports in the country which has already established itself as a source of inclusive sports.
Momentum is building for the success of the international events hosted in India after last year’s event of the Para Shooting World Cup in New Delhi was held to be a great success.
India Wins At The 2024 Para World Championships
Success in para-athletics has already been showcased through the performance of the previous Para World Championships held in Kobe, Japan, in 2024. The Indian team garnered remarkable results with the team finishing sixth in the overall medal tally. On return, the team brought back 17 medals, including six golds, five silvers, and six bronzes, marking the best performance of the country ever in the World Para Athletics Championships.

India is to host the World Para Athletics Championship in 2025 and it will field a sizable contingent of athletes, asserting its solidarity in showing support for sports among the disabled.
