Teen chess prodigy and current World Champion D Gukesh staged yet another thrilling comeback at Norway Chess 2025, this time beating fellow Indian Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi for the first time in classical chess. The 19-year-old had just registered a historic win against Magnus Carlsen the day before and followed it up with another gritty show on Monday.
Trouble Early On Despite Playing White
Despite starting with the white pieces, Gukesh found himself in deep trouble early in the game. Erigaisi’s aggressive middlegame play posed serious challenges, and analysts described Gukesh’s position as “virtually lost” at one point. But Gukesh, known for his composure under pressure, remained focused and patient.
Turning Defense Into Offense
With few attacking possibilities, Gukesh changed tactic and sought to make the position complicated, dragging the game into a time scramble. Finding the correct defensive resources, he weathered the worst before slowly turning the tables on his opponent. The marathon lasted 92 moves before Erigaisi had to resign, ensuring a historic first classical victory for Gukesh over his countryman.

Revenge For Last Week’s Loss
This win was also a redemption for Gukesh, who had previously lost to Arjun in their previous encounter at the same event last week. This time, however, it was the teenager’s determination that paid off.
Gukesh Overtakes Carlsen In Standings
With this victory, Gukesh rose to second spot in the leaderboard with 11.5 points, ahead of Magnus Carlsen. He now lags just behind Fabiano Caruana, who topped the tournament with 12.5 points after beating China’s Wei Yi.
