When asked about the best mistake of his life, he replied, “My marriage.” This article shares Sourav Ganguly’s love story.
Sourav and Dona grew up as neighbors but attended different schools, and their families did not get along. Their love story began during their school days, and as their relationship grew, Sourav proposed to Dona before leaving for a tour to England in 1996.
When he returned from the tour, they planned a court marriage with a friend’s help. However, when they reached the registrar’s office, the media found out, and they had to leave without getting married.
On August 12, 1996, Sourav and Dona secretly had a court marriage but didn’t tell their families. After the marriage, Sourav left for a tour in Sri Lanka.
A few days later, both families found out about Sourav and Dona’s marriage, so the couple had to confess to them. After some initial resistance, the families eventually accepted Dona as their daughter-in-law.
Sourav and Dona had another wedding on February 21, 1997. This time, the wedding was held with full customs and rituals.
Dona, Sourav’s wife, is an Odissi dancer. She also runs her own dance school and knows yoga and karate. Sourav and Dona’s daughter, Sana Ganguly, was born in November 2001, and she is also a dancer like her mother.
