Former England cricket team captain Eoin Morgan expressed his preference for Shubman Gill over Yashasvi Jaiswal in Team India’s squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024. Despite Jaiswal being included in the 15-member squad as a designated opener alongside Rohit Sharma, with Gill placed in the reserves, Morgan believes Gill would have been the better choice.

There had been big debates at the time of the squad announcement as well with fans not happy with the inclusion of Gill in the reserve players for the T20 World Cup. However, Yashasvi Jaiswal too has made ground in order to justify his position in the team and even produced good displays in the latter stages of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024).

Eoin Morgan Wants Shubman Gill In T20 World Cup squad

“Yes, anyone feels a little bad if he is not selected despite good performance. However, this time I could not get selected due to the team combination. It is okay, one should not think too much about things that are not in one’s hands. Yes, I was a little upset in the beginning. Whatever happened is fine. Whatever happens happens for good. Rohit Bhaiya did not say anything special. He only said that just keep working hard. There is a World Cup again after two years. There is no need to worry too much. This is what he said to me,” he told Dainik Jagran.

Both players had respectable performances in the IPL 2024, scoring 426 and 435 runs respectively. However, the selectors chose Jaiswal, whereas Morgan feels that Gill, whom he sees as a future leader, would have excelled in crucial moments.
