Duleep Trophy 2024: India A secure their maiden title

A brilliant century by Shashwat Rawat has guided India A to their maiden Duleep Trophy title, while bowling sensations Tanush Kotian and Prasidh Krishna were their main architects for a win over India C in Anantpur on Sunday.

Sai Sudharsan batted magnificently and even scored a century but Prasidh Krishna’s excellent bowling dismissed him.

After winning the toss, India C would prefer to put India A in, but India A got into early trouble and reached 36/5. However, a match-winning 87 runs for the fourth wicket between Shashwat Rawat and Shams Mulani and then another 90-run association with Avesh Khan rescued the innings. The lower order showed much resolution in reaching a total of 297.

Vijaykumar Vyshak and Anshul Kamboj were the India C’s group bowlers who picked up the most wickets. Gaurav Yadav also picked two wickets.

Indians C then collapsed in the second innings to slide to 41/4. But, a match-saving 95-run partnership for the fifth wicket between Baba Indrajith and Abishek Porel steadied their innings. After another handy partnership of 58 runs between lower-order batters Pulkit Narang and Kamboj, they were still left 63 runs behind on 234. Aaqib Khan and Avesh were the best two bowlers for India A, while Mulani took two wickets, and Kotian one more to his tally.

India A also began disappointingly in the second innings, with the scoreboard reading 94/3 as skipper Mayank Agarwal built a solid 34. However, a century association between Riyan Parag and Shashwat, plus useful knock from wicketkeeper-batter Kumar Kushagra and Mulani, helped India A reach 286/8 before they declared and set up a target of 350 for India C. The bowling standout bowler for India C was Gaurav Yadav as he took 4/68, while Kamboj and Manav Suthar took two wickets each.

Even while the game was in the chase, any resistance came only from a 76-run partnership for the second wicket between skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sai Sudharsan. Sudharsan had made a good hundred, 111 off 206 balls but this proved insufficient as India C was bowled out for 217 runs to lose the game by 132 runs. Kotian and Krishna with the ball did well for India A while Aaqib and Mulani got two wickets apiece.
