India’s speedster Jasprit Bumrah opted for the high way in a suspenseful second day of the third Test against England at Lord’s, where the consistent change of the Dukes ball caused controversy and anger. While there was increasing criticism from followers and retired cricketers, Bumrah avoided making any forceful statements that would harm his match fees.
Within just a few overs of Day 2 itself, the Indian team complained about the state of the Dukes ball, which was not even 10 overs old. Umpires tried the usual hoop test but the ball was found to be too swollen to go through. India captain Shubman Gill was involved in a visibly heated argument with the umpire, probably expressing his annoyance at the choice of replacement ball.
Even during drinks, Gill looked visibly agitated while continuing to discuss. The problem popped up once more after only 48 deliveries when the ball again lost its shape and required a change. In the last session, England also asked for the ball to be replaced however, that one cleared the hoop test, and play resumed normally.
Bumrah Steers Clear of Controversy, Keeps Eye on Performance
When asked regarding the frequent ball changes in a post-day press conference, Bumrah steered clear of fanning the flames.
“The ball gets changed, I don’t actually have control over that,” Bumrah explained. “Of course, I do not want to lose money because I work really hard and play lots of overs. So I do not want to say anything controversial and have my match fees taken away. We just bowl with what is provided for us. Occasionally it happens in your favor, occasionally not that is just the way it is.”
In spite of the distractions, Bumrah produced a world-class performance, claiming a brilliant 5/74 in trying heat at Lord’s. His spell featuring the vital wickets of Joe Root, Ben Stokes, and Harry Brook, turned the tide squarely in India’s direction.

Bumrah Praises Youngsters, Keeps Guidance Subtle
On Day 1, young Indian all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy showed up Bumrah’s leadership and influence, saying they do everything the senior bowler tells them. Retaliating with a bit of humor, Bumrah shot back:
“Sir, first of all, that’s a lie, he hasn’t asked me anything!”
He continued to compliment the confidence of the young players in the team.
These young ones are confident and do not require much guidance. I attempt to guide them in whatever way they want offering my previous experiences, particularly from tours of England. I don’t, however, impose my style or technique on them because every bowler has his own way. If they require guidance, I’m always there to assist them.”
A Balanced Voice in a Heated Moment
As the Dukes ball controversy continues to raise eyebrows, Bumrah’s measured reaction was evidence of his maturity as a senior member of the team. By concentrating on what was in his control his performance instead of criticizing conditions, Bumrah led by example both on and off the pitch.
As India seek to capitalise on their momentum in the Test match, Bumrah’s leadership, both of ability and temperament, is an essential asset.
