Lausanne (Switzerland): Reigning Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra created history by becoming the first Indian to win gold at the Diamond League in Lausanne, Switzerland on Friday. The athlete from Haryana also qualified for the next leg of the Diamond League to be held in Zurich on September 7 and 8.
Neeraj Chopra led from first throw
The 24-year-old subedar from the Indian Army took the lead in the first attempt with a throw of 89.08 metres. He then registered 85.18m in the second attempt. He chose to pass up his third attempt and the fourth attempt was a foul.
Neeraj Chopra again dropped the fifth attempt, while in the sixth and final attempt, he managed 80.04 meters. Only those in the top three get the sixth attempt. Neeraj Chopra’s first attempt enabled him to seal the win in style. The first attempt was also his third-best effort in a glitterring career.

Neeraj Chopra had missed the Commonwealth Games
Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Jakub Vadlejk finished second with a best throw of 85.88m, while American Kurtis Thompson finished third with a best throw of 83.72m.
Neeraj had come here to play in his first tournament after the World Championship. He did not participate in the Commonwealth Games (CWG) due to a groin injury.
