World Classical winner, India’s D. Gukesh has lost the 2nd leg of the quarterfinals at Weissenhaus Freestyle Chess Grand Slam tour in Hamburg, Germany 2025 on Monday from USA’s Fabiano Caruana with both players ending the play at 39:10 and 42:07 respectively. This resulted in him getting knocked out from the top 4 after back to back losses from Caruana.

Gukesh will try to reserve his spot in the 5th-8th place in the playoffs. Caruana on the other hand was into the domination right from the start. He needed just 18 moves to confirm his place in the semi finals. He will be taking on the winner between Uzbekistan’s Javokhir Sindarov and another American Hikaru Nakamura.

Gukesh had an accuracy of 85.6 as compared to Caruana who had an accuracy for 97. Although Gukesh lost in the Quarterfinals but the 18 years old has a long way ahead in future before becoming a force to reckon with in freestyle chess.

Gukesh has a lot to work on other parts of chess whether it’s chess 960 or shorter time frame games. Well due to his World Championship, his only focus was on classical now if he wants he can focus more on other parts. It’s all up to him or he will just be good in classical.
