The latest chess ranking issued by FIDE, on Saturday, has D Gukesh, winner of the world champion title, reached a new career best of third place globally and R Praggnanandhaa, another Indian champion, has re-entered the top super-elite ranking for top 10 athletes.

The 18-year-old had been in peak form since he beat China’s Ding Liren in the World Championship event in Singapore in December 2022 and claimed the world championship trophy. He took 10 points to cross the 2787 mark. Gukesh took second place in the Tata Steel Masters in Wijk aan Zee after Praggnanandhaa, on tiebreaker, and is now tied for third behind the US rating master, Hikaru Nakamura (2802) and Norway’s No. 1 rated Magnus Carlsen (2833, rating as the highest player in the world). In this climb, Gukesh practically eclipsed fellow Indian Arjun Erigaisi and American Fabiano Caruana.
After holding the top spot for a long period, Erigaisi, India’s top-ranked player for some time, fell to fifth place with a rating of 2777. Praggnanandhaa has returned to the top 10 for the first time since July 2024 after his wins in Wijk aan Zee at the Tata Steel Masters and in the Prague Masters. His score is rising by 17 points (2758) and is currently ranked eighth place overall.

With regards to women, Koneru Humpy is the only Indian having 6th rank in the rating list of 2528. R Vaishali is in 14th place with a rating of 2484, while Harika Dronavalli is ranked 16th with a rating of 2483. These are FIDE ratings, official FIDE ratings are different from live Elo rating that is changing after each game.
