CWG 2022: India’s boxing contingent has returned home after flying the tricolor high at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham, England.
On Tuesday morning, they were given a warm welcome by the officials of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) with flowers and garlands at the airport.
At the Commonwealth Games 2022, India won a total of 61 medals. In boxing, India won 7 medals including 3 gold, which is 2 medals less than the previous edition of the CWG in Gold Coast, Australia.
Golden performance by three boxers
At the Commonwealth Games, three boxers from India struck gold. These included Amit Panghal, Nikhat Zareen and Nitu Ghanghas.
For Nitu and Nikhat, it was their first appearance at the Commonwealth Games. Nitu won the gold medal in the women’s 45-48 kg weight category, while Nikhat Zareen won in the women’s 48-50 kg flightweight category. Amit Panghal emerged champion in the men’s 48-51 kg weight category.
Sagar Ahlawat won silver
Sagar Ahlawat won the silver medal in the men’s super heavyweight (+92 kg) weight category. He was defeated 4-0 by Delicious Ory of England in the final.
3 bronze medals in CWG boxing
Three Indian boxers won bronze medals, which included Mohammad Husamuddin, Rohit Tokas and Jasmine. Husamuddin bagged the bronze in the men’s 54 to 57 kg weight category, Rohit Tokas in the men’s welterweight (63.5-67 kg) category and Jasmine in the women’s (57-60 kg) category.
