Cristiano Ronaldo reached his 900th career goal that proved to be the winner as Portugal beat Croatia 2-1 in their Nations League opener on Thursday. Portugal took an early lead when Diogo Dalot perfectly placed a shot set up by Bruno Fernandes in the seventh minute.

Ronaldo, who hadn’t scored in Portugal’s five Euro 2024 matches, reached his milestone with a close-range finish from a well-delivered cross by Nuno Mendes in the 34th minute. Croatia equalized just before halftime when Dalot inadvertently deflected Borna Sosa’s shot into his own net. But after a scoreless second half, Portugal held on for the win. The other League A Group 1 match on Thursday saw Poland pip Scotland 3-2. On Sunday, Portugal hosts Scotland, while Croatia is at home to Poland.

Ronaldo’s Stellar Career

Ronaldo has been in his most prolific phase with Real Madrid, with a record of 450 goals in 438 appearances. Ronaldo has scored 131 goals for Portugal.

The goal-scoring record rages on to other clubs: 68 for Al-Nassr, 101 for Juventus, 145 for Manchester United, and 5 for Sporting CP.

Ronaldo started his career when he was 17 years old and first shone bright with Manchester United, scoring 118 goals in 293 games. Nine years later, he moved to Real Madrid in a switch that cost the Spanish club a then-world record of 94 million euros in 2009. He spent nine years in the Spanish capital as a key member, then eventually moved to Juventus, where he surpassed the 100-goal threshold.

He later returned to Manchester United, where he added 27 goals from 54 appearances. Ronaldo is currently playing for Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia.
