The Portuguese legend, now 40 and still going strong with Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr, netted twice in Portugal’s commanding 5-0 win over Armenia in Yerevan.

Cristiano Ronaldo has achieved another milestone in football history on Saturday, September 6 as he surpassed Lionel Messi’s record for most goals in FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. The Portuguese legend who is now 40 and is still going strong, helped Portugal register a commanding win 5-0 against Armenia in Yerevan.

It was Ronaldo’s brace that lifted his tally in World Cup qualifying matches to 38, he overtook Messi’s previous record of 36. He is now just behind Guatemala’s Carlos Ruiz, who sits at the top with 39 goals.

Portugal’s dominance was further highlighted when there was a double by Joao Felix who recently joined Al Nassr. Then a goal from Joao Cancelo added to Portugal’s commanding win following which Cancelo paid tribute to his teammate Diogo Jota, who recently died in a tragic car accident.

The win has strengthened Portugal and now it is at the top of Group F as they continue their qualifying campaign. The next match will be against Hungary on Tuesday whether the Hungarians arrive with a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Republic of Ireland in Dublin.
