New Delhi: Portugal and Al-Nassr star Cristiano Ronaldo will be most capped player in the history of the game, if new coach Roberto Martinez field him. Ronaldo will become the player with the most international appearance in history, if he features in Portugal’s opening Euro 2024 qualifier against Liechtenstein on Friday (March 24).

Level with Al-Mutawa 

The 38-year-old forward currently stands equal with Kuwait’s forward Bader Al-Mutawa on 196 international caps, with his last appearance for his country coming from the bench against Morocco in the 2022 World Cup quarter-finals.

Ronaldo stats with Al-Nassr

Ronaldo, has been called by Portugal new boss Roberto Martinez for start of their latest European Championship qualifying campaign. Ronaldo currently enjoying his impressive maiden season with Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr, in his 10 matches, Ronaldo scored 9 goals.

Most goal in men’s football history

Ronaldo also holds the record for most international goals (118) scored in men’s football and will look to further add to his tally after being assured by Martinez that he will continue to play an important role in the Portugal squad.

“Records are my motivation,” Ronaldo told reporters.

“I want to become the most capped player in history. That would make me proud,” he added.

“But it doesn’t stop there, I still want to be called up very often,” Ronaldo concluded.

Ronaldo’s career

Ronaldo’s international career began in August 2003 in a friendly against Kazakhstan and he has represented Portugal in every international competition since Euro 2004.

After the Liechtenstein match, Portugal face Luxemburg on Sunday.
