For Indian cricket, the year 2025 turned out to be a rollercoaster ride, but unfortunately, not always the best one. During this period, India faced some of the most surprising results in cricket, as they endured startling Test implosions, unpredicted ODI losses, and even T20I defeats. The fans were shocked watching the team not being able to cope up with the pressure and losing the matches in both the home and away environments. Here’s a look at the five matches that were marked by all the wrong reasons and stood out.
India vs South Africa – Test Series
India faced a tremendous home series against South Africa. Their biggest-ever Test defeat by runs was the loss of the 2nd Test in Guwahati by 408 runs and the 1st Test in Kolkata by 30 runs, where they failed to chase a modest target.

England vs India – Third Test, Lords
It was a tough competition and in the second innings when India came in to bat they just had to chase 192 runs but the Shubman Gill led team India were bowled out at the score of 170 just 22 runs short of win following which England sealed the third Test in their favour.

India vs South Africa – 2nd T20I, New Chandigarh
India was the loser of a 51-run defeat in the T20 series, the opener of which took place in the home ground for the Indian team. Not being able to catch up with the strong total put up by the South African team has been an indication of their continuous problems in the shortest format and has given the Proteas a lead in the series.
India vs Australia – 2nd ODI, Adelaide
India made a decent score of 264/9 in their 50 overs at Adelaide, with Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer as the main scorers. On the other hand, Australia got the target with a two-wicket margin and 22 balls left, mainly due to the batting of Matthew Short and Cooper Connolly, thus giving India an unsatisfactory defeat in the series.
India vs Australia – Fifth Test, Sydney
Australia chased the target and scored 162 runs with six wickets to spare. Victory in Sydney sealed the Border-Gavaskar series at 3-1 against India. It was Boland again, sharp with the ball on familiar turf, picking key moments apart. Head stood firm early; Webster matched him, calm through pressure patches. Their stand didn’t dazzle, just delivered. With that win, the urn returned south. More than pride, there was a prize: qualification for the World Test Championship decider.
