World Cup Qualifier: Scotland defeated Zimbabwe by 31 runs in the World Cup Qualifier Super-6 match played at Bulawayo on Tuesday that ended the journey of Zimbabwe in the race for the World Cup. Scotland’s victory was also special because it defeated Zimbabwe at home and knocked them out of the World Cup. Earlier, Scotland had pulled off a major upset by ousting the West Indies from the World Cup.
Michael Leask played a brilliant inning of 48 runs
In the match played against Zimbabwe, Scotland batting first scored 238 runs losing 8 wickets in 50 overs. All the Scottish batsmen contributed in their little way for the team and this made for a decent total. Michael Leask played brilliant innings of 48 runs in 34 balls on the lower order. And Mark Watt scored 21 runs in 15 balls.
The top order of Zimbabwe, who came to chase the target, was demolished by the bowlers of Scotland. Joylord Gumby 0, Captain Craig Irwin 2, Innocent Kaia 12 and Sean Williams were dismissed for 12 runs. However, Ryan Burl, Sikandar Raza and Wesley Medhvre put up a bit of a fight. Burl scored 83 in 84 balls, Raza scored 34 in 40 balls and Medhavere scored 40 in 39 balls, but it was not enough for the team’s victory. Zimbabwe’s entire team succumbed to 203 runs in 41.1 overs in front of Scotland’s superb bowling.
Scotland bowlers outplayed Zimbabwe
For Scotland, Chris Sole took 3 wickets while bowling well. At the same time, Brandon McMullen took 2 wickets and Michael Leask took 2 wickets. Apart from these, Safian Sharif, Mark Watt and Chris Greaves took one wicket each. Overall, the entire Scotland team played a great game against Zimbabwe and put them out of the World Cup race at home. After this victory, the World Cup ticket of the Scotland team is almost confirmed.
Zimbabwe needed to win only one of their last two matches in previous qualifier tournaments but lost both.
