In spite of speculations surrounding IPL future, Virat Kohli is all set to continue playing for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the next IPL 2026 season. The erstwhile India skipper, who finally won his first IPL title last season after waiting for 18 years, was recently in the midst of speculations that he would leave the franchise. But those reports have now been put to rest.
It was previously reported that the 36-year-old had rejected a commercial sponsorship offer connected with the franchise before the new season began. However, insiders familiar with the matter explained that such off-field deals are completely independent of player retention contracts.
“He has reportedly refused a commercial contract, but what does that mean? He will definitely play for RCB. If he is playing, he is definitely going to turn out for the same franchise,” Aakash Chopra cleared the air.

Amongst the increasing rumors, cricket commentator and ex-India batter Aakash Chopra intervened to give RCB supporters some assurance. According to him, Kohli will “definitely” play for RCB in IPL 2026, silencing any speculations regarding the star batter’s connection with the team.
“He (Kohli) has just won the trophy. Why will he leave the franchise then? He isn’t going anywhere. What contract can be refused is in the realm of speculation. He might have a dual contract,” Chopra added.
Having played for RCB from day one of the IPL, Kohli is now the figurehead of the franchise. He has often talked about his wish to retire as an RCB player, and the franchise has reciprocated that commitment every year by retaining his services.

Kohli, the leading run-scorer in the history of IPL, has scored 8,661 runs in 267 games with 71 scores above 50. Last season was top-notch as he accumulated 657 runs in 15 matches with an average of 54.75, contributing significantly towards RCB’s title triumph.
As the IPL 2026 Auction draws near, Kohli is expected to feature at the very top of RCB’s retention list.
