India’s mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy performed exceptionally well in India vs England T20I series following which he received maiden call-up for ODI series. This sparked speculation whether he will be playing Champions Trophy or not, Rohit Sharma cleared the air about the same in pre-match press conference at Nagpur.
In the press conference at VCA stadium, Rohit Sharma said that the Varun Chakravarthy is definitely in contention for his place in the ICC Champions Trophy.
“Yeah look, he has certainly shown something different. I understand that it is a T20 format but he has clearly got something different about him. So we just wanted to have an option and see what we can do with him,” the 37-year-old said.
“Clearly during the series it presents us an opportunity to play him at some stage and see what he is capable of. Right now we are not thinking about whether we are going to take him or not but definitely he will be in contention. If things plan out really well for us and he does what is required then definitely there is something that we need to think about,” the Indian skipper added.
Varun has travelled to Nagpur with the Indian squad and the participated in the training sessions on Tuesday ahead of the series opener scheduled on February 6. His incredible performance in the recently concluded T20I series earned him a call-up for ODI series. In the T20I series against England he picked up 14 wickets in five-match series with an excellent average of 9.86 and an economy of 7.66, he was also declared as the player of the series.
