The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has finally ended the uncertainty about Rohit Sharma’s Test career. The 37-year-old will be the captain of Indian Team during their tour of England in June, according to a PTI report. India will be touring England to play a five-Test series, beginning June 20 at Headingley, with an aim to win their first away series in Old Blighty since 2007.
Rohit Sharma Likely To Continue As Captain
Even after a series of disappointing performances and consecutive Test series defeats against New Zealand and Australia, Rohit will retain his captaincy. His recent red-ball performance has been alarming, having scored merely 164 runs in 10 Tests from September 2024 to January 2025. His Australian tour was especially catastrophic, where he scored a paltry 31 runs at an abysmal average of 6.2—the worst-ever by a touring Indian captain in the history of the country. A short stint back in domestic cricket in the Ranji Trophy also did not help turn his form around, further questioning his spot in the longest format.
Team India Squad To Be Announced In Last Week Of IPL
“There is enough time to announce the squad, mostly ahead of the knockouts or just after those matches. You will then get a clear picture as to which players are available by then,” a source close to the development told PTI on the condition of anonymity.
Jasprit Bumrah’s Fitness: A Big Concern
In the meantime, India will keep a close eye on the fitness of Jasprit Bumrah, who continues to recover from a back injury he picked up during the Australia tour. The pace leader will miss the early games of the Mumbai Indians’ IPL 2025 season. The BCCI selection panel headed by Ajit Agarkar is likely to give a more precise idea about India’s squad for the English tour by the last week of IPL 2025. As a warm-up before the series of the senior team, India A will take on England Lions in two four-day games and some of the most important Indian players are also expected to find a place in the squad. This is in the BCCI plan to have the players sufficiently prepared to face the threat from Ben Stokes and his team.
