The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025 was passed in Parliament on Wednesday, August 21, but there were concerns regarding the future of the sponsorship agreement between Dream11 and the Indian cricket team.
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia reiterated the board’s intent to comply with the new laws “in true letter and spirit”. He did, however, admit that a detailed scrutiny of the bill’s implications especially in case of ongoing associations like the one with Dream11 was necessary.
Talking to the Times of India, Saikia explained that the BCCI would initiate such commercial ties only if they fall in line with government rules. He cited similarities with previous bans on advertising items like alcohol and tobacco both categories the BCCI avoided as soon as the respective bans came into effect.
āIf itās not permissible, weāll not do anything,ā the BCCI secretary added.
āThe BCCI will follow every policy of the country that is framed by the central government,ā Saikia remarked.
Dream11, an online gaming platform based on real money, is the current jersey sponsor of India’s men’s and women’s cricket teams. Their agreement of INR 358 crore, is from July 2023 to March 2026, which includes branding rights across all forms. The association started with India’s ICC World Test Championship series against the West Indies.
