Why Did Ravichandran Ashwin Retire From IPL? Here’s What He Said About Playing In Other Leagues

The veteran off-spinner made his debut in league for CSK in 2009 and till now he has played 221 matches across many franchises and bagged 187 wickets.

The 39-year old off-spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League. He posted about this decision on X, (formerly Twitter) where he also hinted that he will be playing franchise cricket around the world.

Why Did Ashwin Retire From IPL?

Even though the reason remains unclear behind this sudden decision, Ashwin mentioned that it was his time to bid adieu to the Indian Premier League and start a new beginning where he is now willing to play around various leagues around the world.

“Special day and hence a special beginning. They say every ending will have a new start, my time as an IPL cricketer comes to a close today, but my time as an explorer of the game around various leagues begins today.”

Ashwin was a part of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in IPL 2025 where the franchise brought him for INR 9.75 crore. He could not leave much impact and had an underwhelming season where he picked 7 wickets in 9 matches. Earlier there were also reports that Ashwin and CSK were all set to part ways for the upcoming IPL season.
