Matthew Breetzke, a dynamic top-order batter, and an outstanding fielder who has made the reputation of facing pressure, with Durban Super Giants’ skipper Keshav Maharaj comparing him with Virat Kohli for being on the same page. His rich cricketing lineage was visible at an early stage when he was picked for the first team of Grey High at the age of 14. At 16, he became a regular member of South Africa’s Under-19 team and scored more than 1,000 runs in 25 youth ODIs. He was South Africa’s second-highest run-getter during the 2018 Under-19 World Cup.
Gradual Rise In Domestic Cricket
Breetzke’s rise continued when he was included in South Africa’s Emerging Squad for a tour to Sri Lanka in 2018 and played his first provincial cricket for Eastern Province in the 2018-19 season. Breetzke was a cracker in the 2022-23 season of CSA four-day first-class competitions; he finished as the top run-getter with three centuries and four fifties in 14 innings, at an incredible average of 60.58.
Power-Hitting Skills
He may be known for doing well in the long format of the game, but his aggressive nature made him in huge demand for T20s as well. He has been a quick run-scorer, and so, he was picked for the South African T20I team in September 2023; he made his debut versus Australia. During the 2024 SA20, he came third when the running totals were considered, and during CSA T20 Challenge, he topped the list of batters. Despite these successes, Breetzke was omitted from South Africa’s 2024 T20 World Cup roster, and this led him to sign a deal with Northants and continue the successful T20 form.
International Debut For South Africa
Apart from the T20, Breetzke also got his first appearance for South Africa in the second ODI against New Zealand, which further entrenched him in the national side. This was one of the greatest moments in his career, demonstrating how he developed from a potential young talent into an important rising star of South Africa.
