West Indies create unique World Record in ODI against Bangladesh

At Sher-e-Bangla, the West Indies didn’t just play to win they experimented, innovated, and ended up making cricket history in the process.

The second ODI between Bangladesh and West Indies at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium proved to be historic, as the tourists made a record-breaking decision they bowled all 50 overs with spin. Shai Hope’s team became the first men’s ODI side in history to employ only spinners during an innings, and not a single delivery was bowled by a pacer. Even with seamer Justin Greaves in the team, the West Indies captain did not use him at all and instead depended solely on his spin resources to take advantage of Dhaka’s spinned-out pitch.

Until then, the highest number of spin overs in a men’s ODI was 44, achieved on many occasions by Sri Lanka. Even in women’s cricket, the record before was 47 overs of spin bowling by Sri Lanka against India in 2004 and now this has been broken. The West Indies’ aggressive ploy appeared to be inspired by the first ODI, where Bangladesh leg-spinner Rishad Hossain destroyed them with a six-wicket haul (6/35).

Batting first, Bangladesh came up with 213/7 in their 50 overs. Left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie was the best of the bowlers with three wickets for 65 runs, and part-timer Alick Athanaze impressed everyone with a tight spell of 10 overs that cost them only 14 runs, taking two important wickets.

Shai Hope responded with a patient 53 off 67 balls to lead the pursuit, but West Indies collapsed at the end and were bowled out for a precise 213, bringing the match into an exciting Super Over. The visitors scored 10 runs batting first, and Akeal Hosein defended the score successfully by limiting Bangladesh to nine winning a nail-biting one-run win and tying the series 1-1.

With the series currently level, everyone waits with bated breath for the decider on October 23 at the same stadium, when both sides will try to outwit one another and fans will be eager to know if West Indies persist with their all-spin experiment.
