There were unusual scenes that emerged in the Women’s Big Bash League at Karen Rolton Oval as the clash between Adelaide Strikers and Hobart Hurricanes was abandoned due to a freak accident. This took place during the innings break when a heavy roller unintentionally embedded a cricket a ball which left a large hole on the pitch that was unrepairable.
It was a routine preparation, ground staff were rolling wicket when a loose ball came in between from the Hurricanes warm-up drills and one of them was rolled underneath. The rolled is extremely heavy and because of its weight the ball was forced deep inside the turf creating a crater in the middle of playing area.

Even though repeated attempts were carried out, the ground crew was unable to revive the pitch for playing following which the match was abandoned as confirmed by the statement released by the Strikers.
“The match between the Adelaide Strikers and Hobart Hurricanes has been abandoned at Karen Rolton Oval.”
“During the innings break and with teams warming up, a ball was inadvertently rolled onto the pitch while the roller was being used. The ball went beneath the roller creating a hole in the pitch.”
“As a result, the pitch conditions were changed significantly. After consultation between the match referee and the umpires, it was considered unreasonable to expect the Hurricanes to bat in conditions that were materially different than those the Strikers had experienced.”
“Both team captains were consulted by the officials and were accepting of this decision.” the official statement mentioned
