Virat Kohli ODI comeback remains uncertain, Ajit Agarkar still waiting for clarity: Report

The development has intensified speculation about Kohli’s ODI plans, particularly with the next 50-over World Cup just two years away.

Virat Kohli’s comeback to international cricket continues to remain uncertain, with growing doubts over his ODI career reportedly leaving chief selector Ajit Agarkar concerned. The 36-year-old last turned out for India during the Champions Trophy earlier this year where the team secured back-to-back ICC titles under Rohit Sharma hasn’t featured since the IPL 2025 final in May.

According to a report by RevSportz, there is a growing “sense of pessimism” surrounding Kohli’s international future, mainly due to what is described as a “lack of communication” from the former India skipper. The uncertainty has only deepened after both Kohli and Rohit were omitted from the India A squad for the upcoming three-match one-day series against Australia A at home. Team management had apparently wanted both seniors to be a part of their preparatory build-up towards the white-ball tour of Australia later this year.

Australia A are at the moment playing unofficial Tests in India, with the limited-overs component set to get underway in Kanpur later this month. The hope was that Rohit and Kohli would play the one-day matches to get match fitness back, considering neither has partaken in competitive cricket since the IPL. Both had passed compulsory pre-season fitness tests last month, but their build-up paths were different Rohit reported to the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, while Kohli had his tests conducted in London.

The development has intensified speculation about Kohli’s ODI plans, particularly with the next 50-over World Cup just two years away. Earlier this year, reports suggested that both Kohli and Rohit were considering a farewell series in Australia. The duo has already bid adieu to T20Is following India’s 2024 World Cup triumph in Barbados, and to Test cricket after the 2025 WTC Final in May. With the BCCI likely to demand both play domestic cricket if they are to continue in the fray for ODIs, there have been rumblings they might choose to retire from the format altogether in October. Neither Kohli nor Rohit has yet responded publicly to the report.
