Senior batter Virat Kohli has expressed his displeasure over broadcasters frequently discussing his favorite food spots instead of focusing on the game. Speaking at the RCB Innovation Lab Indian Sports Summit on March 15, Kohli stated that a broadcaster’s role should be to analyze cricket, not to highlight what he ate the previous night.
Broadcasters’ Obsession with Kohli’s Diet
Since his U19 days, Kohli has been in the spotlight, emerging as one of the most talented players of his generation. Over the past 15 years, he has cemented his place as one of the greatest batters in modern-day cricket. Known for his intense discipline regarding fitness and diet, Kohli’s eating habits have often been a subject of interest for fans and media alike.
“A broadcast show needs to talk about the game and not what I ate yesterday for lunch or my favourite chole-bhature place in Delhi. You can’t have that in cricket matches. Rather, you could talk about what an athlete is going through,” Virat Kohli said at the RCB Innovation Lab Indian Sports Summit.
Food Discussed Over Cricket
Every time he plays in Delhi, television channels will go out of their way to promote his favorite restaurants, which Kohli does not think is required. Even when he made a comeback to the Ranji Trophy 2025, his chilli paneer lunch order became a news headline, once again underlining how his individual choices tend to take centrestage over cricket talk. Kohli asked TV channels to give more intelligent match commentary instead of talking about his food choices.
This isn’t the first time Kohli’s food choices have been in focus. During the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023, his lunch order became a talking point on Day 2 of the Test match against Australia. The unnecessary focus on his meals even prompted head coach Rahul Dravid to comment on the menu.
Kohli Set For IPL 2025 Return
After taking a short recess after India’s Champions Trophy win, Kohli is now back to playing for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. He gave a magnificent group-stage performance in the Champions Trophy and will now be observed opening the innings with his new opening mate, Phil Salt.
With cricket always on his mind, Kohli has been vocal—he wishes the same for broadcasters.
