Speaking before India’s Champions Trophy 2025 final against New Zealand, Gill conceded the difficulties that accompany such high-stakes games. The Men in Blue have been in peak condition all tournament, going undefeated along the way to the final—and they don’t want to repeat what happened to them in 2023’s ODI World Cup, where they were narrowly got beaten by Australia in the final.

“It’s my second ICC event for team India and hence I’m definitely excited. We’ll try and achieve what we couldn’t do the last time. There is always big-match pressure. But if you look at the last game, Australia didn’t have a lot of experienced bowlers. The match was big. In such matches, whoever handles pressure and doesn’t think a lot that they’re playing final, those teams win,” Shubman Gill said in the press conference

He conceded that Australia handled the pressure better in the 2023 final, and this time around, the team is keen not to repeat history against New Zealand. The young batter also spoke about previous teams that excelled in ICC knockout matches, highlighting how their pressure-handling skills took them to several championship titles.
